Our October 2016 team included an amazing group of eye care providers. Thanks to their efforts, the students that needed corrective lens were able to receive them. The team also checked on the students with chronic medical problems and acute issues.

Dr. Jeri visiting with the triplets.

OSAPO works toward improving the health of the communities it serves by focusing on projects that ensure clean water, access to latrines, and through improving nutrition.  Here is a photo of the chicken coup used to supply eggs to the nutrition program. Read more about OSAPO at osapo.org

October medical team to Power of Education Foundation school clinic

A team of 5 traveled to PEF in October 2013 to continue the ongoing care for the students at the school. The team was very busy as the school has grown to include kindergarten through sixth grade. The week was spend evaluating each of the 55 new students, seeing children with acute issues, and getting blood pressure, height and weight measurements of each of the students. This is not a small feat when there are 189 students! One of the students was identified as having a congenital heart defect during a previous medical trip to the school. We are so happy that she was able to get her Tetralogy of Fallot repaired in the Dominican Republic ! Mom, dad, and the kids are so happy! Dad stated that he no longer has to carry his daughter to school. She runs and plays now!

KHH has been providing health care to the students at the PEF school since the school opened in October 2010. Medical teams travel to the school each April and October.

Kids Health for Haiti team visits OSAPO

A team visited OSAPO in October and they stayed very busy during their stay!  They worked in clinic seeing acutely ill children daily, treating a variety of conditions.  Three children were hospitalized during the week. Pneumonia, post ictal state and severe malnutrition were the reasons the kids required hospitalization.  An outreach clinic was done to a remote village.  Several hundred children and young adults were seen.  Evenings are spent with team members from the US, and our friends and colleagues that work at OSAPO exchanging ideas.  OSAPO is opening a new maternity and pediatrics center and as in preparation for the expansion of care in these areas, education with staff doctors and nurses about caring for newborns, including routine warming, drying, stimulating, signs of low blood sugar, simple assisted breathing techniques, risk of hypothermia immediately post birth and signs of infection and sepsis were discussed.

We look forward to having another team travel to OSAPO in April 2014 as well as to offering medical rotations for residents or other physicians to spend a month at OSAPO. Here is a photograph of the new maternity and pediatric building.

The patients come from the mountainous areas that surround Rousseau, where OSAPO is located.
